Song of the Day: “The Wheel” by Edie Brickell & New Bohemians

This first video is the instructional one. The second one is just me playing it straight through. It’s cool because it’s a song in one key, B natural minor, with every note, every chord within that key, yet has five distinct parts: Intro, Verse, Chorus, Middle Eight, 5th Part (“Back and forth, and back and forth,” F#m-G, and from a pure song craft perspective, I don’t know how to classify.)

This is just me playing it straight through at tempo, or what I percieved to be tempo. I just drove down to the gas station and listened to the original and it was a tad quicker and more aggressive than what I remembered. Probably that late eighties thing of firing the drummer, changing the name, etc. etc. Even with all that which bugs me to no end, they had a good producer and the album was great then and still holds up as a fantastic listening experience.

Somewhere there's somebody that looks just like you do,
Acts just like you too,
Feels the same way,
Somewhere there's a person in a far away place
With a different name, and a face that looks like you
Do ya think about who it might be?
Do you wonder where you are?
In a distant foreign country,
Ridin' 'round in another car,
Where the wheels keep on turning and turning and turning and
Nothing's disturbing the way they go around
The wheel keeps on turning and turning and turning and
Nothing's disturbing the way it goes around
All your thoughts are in another head,
Your dreams are sleepin' in different bed
The force that moves you is a circular breath-
Of life and death going 'round and 'round and 'round
The wheel keeps on turning and turning and turning and
Nothing's disturbing the way it goes around
The wheel keeps on turning and turning and turning and
Nothing's disturbing the way it goes around
Maybe you ride a different wave,
Maybe you catch another ray of the sun-
That I've just begun to feel
Back and forth and back and forth and back and forth around again
Again, and again
The wheel keeps on turning and turning and turning and
Nothing's disturbing the way it goes around
The wheel keeps on turning and turning and turning and
Nothing's disturbing the way it goes around
The wheel keeps on turning and turning and turning and
Nothing's disturbing the way it goes around
The wheel keeps on turning and turning and turning and
Nothing's disturbing the way it goes around
Back and forth and back and forth and back and forth around again.
